Thoughts: Important Stats For Pet Tanking

Now before people get hopeful, this isn't going to have a lot of heavy numbers theorycrafting in it. I'm allergic to numbers, and clinically mathematically retarded. Due to this, my thoughts are from the point of view of 'This is what I see', and I welcome (in fact, practically beg) people who can either correct the views or add in real and heavy numbers.

With 3.3 coming up fast, and the net buffs we are going to be getting for tanking, I figured I'd put down the usual measure of what I ...

So I claimed to have done ALL the bosses in heroics, but I realised today that is not quite true:

The missing one is the timed run boss in CoS, I would venture that that is the ultimate pre-3.3 pet tanking challenge!

I therefore propose a Grande Challenge!

First one to down him after MT'ing the whole instance gets a Ice-Cream sundae on the house. I'm sure Durante (being our most esteemed great leader) wouldn't mind coming up with the prize and sending it by ship .

I have been running heroics somewhat more regularly of late and one thing I have noticed is that group composition with buffs makes a huge difference. This is fairly obvious of course, but what I have been noticing is that shammies do something that makes threat go through the roof.

I was wondering if anyone has noticed this too, and whether anyone knows specifically what causes it.

So i completed my mission to do all the heroics today with OK, and we made it into an achievement run.

The first one was "Respect Your Elders" (*Edit*), this needed a bit of choreography to move him down to the next room (remember to clear) and up to the far stairs. DO NOT PULL HIM OUT OF THIS ROOM AS HE WILL ENRAGE. We found this out the hard way when we tried to have one pally kite him to the entrance. The only thing special about this run was that we managed to do all three of the achievements first time, something helped not inconsiderably by the fact that the dps comprised 2xPally and 1xDK.

The biggest difficulty was Abuse the Ooze, but I think we ended up killing many more oozes than required to be sure, unfortunately resulting in the death of my ...

Any thoughts on the implications of this:

For Icecrown Citadel, we are implementing a spell that will affect every enemy creature in the raid. The spell, called Chill of the Throne, will allow creatures to ignore 20% of the dodge chance of their melee targets. So if a raid's main tank had 30% dodge normally, in Icecrown Citadel they will effectively have 10%.?

In the current implementation this will effectively reduce our dodge to zero. I am not quite sure what that means, but potentially ...

So keeping my gear and my spec, I decided I'd see how I do trying to solo the headless horseman. Despite taking a bit long, I found I could get him to phase 3,(his head to about 30%, with it getting close call to Blastoise dying at a few points, but I just taunted horsemen off for a sec. As luck would have it, my time lined up so I could do a dungeon about the same time as a group of guildies was trying to do a HVH run for the new 80s in the guild. I volunteered to tank (with the response of many jeers) and we headed off.

Anyway, in my BM tank setup (30k pet, 33k hunter) I was finally able to kill Chillmaw and the adds without getting my pet killed and without having to do the fight twice. Here's how it went down.

OK. It sucks. I've done all of three arena battles, lost every one of them, and decided it really wasn't for me.

With the Crusader's Seals, the Conquest Badges, ToC, and Wintergrasp marks (although I guess that's considered PVP gear), there is a *lot* of new equipment available for tanking hunters. Suggest that maybe you want to go through and give it a few updates, in particular with the Wintergrasp stuff since it's so easy to obtain comparatively.

I assumed:

81 - 5.5%

82 - 6%

83 - 8%

This might be a throw back from level 70 hit stats. Someone posted a wiki saying:

80 - 5%

81 - 5.2%

82 - 5.4%

83 - 8%

Which is right? I assume the 2nd one, so i'm thinking the reverse would be:

Pet Resilience: All player pets now get 100% of their master’s resilience.

I did some more calculations for Silverback versus Spiked collar because it has been bothering me, could someone see if I made any glaring errors here?

My calculations are as follows-

The first bit is easy because SB gives 1.43 TPS per 1k health per point (10 health per 3.5 seconds*0.5 threat per point healed.)

or

0.013 threat per second per point of stamina per point.

30k pet health yields ~85 TPS and 50K yields ~144TPS. (Roughly)

Hunters

Misdirection: Redesigned. Instead of having finite charges, it now begins a 4-second timer when the hunter using Misdirection performs a threat-generating attack, during which all threat generated by the hunter goes to the friendly target. In addition, multiple hunters can now misdirect threat to the same friendly target simultaneously.

But for those of us attempting heroics - Rejoice! Blizz has helpfully give us 3 new consumables (Runescroll of fortitude, Drums of forgotten kings and Drums of the Wild) which give raidwide GF, BOK and GOTW buffs respectively.

So even a 5m HC (or Solo ) can benifit from the major buffs a 10/25man raid would probably have even without a Priest, Pally or Druid in it.

If you haven't heard the uproar yet...

TBW reduced to 10 secs with a 10% passive damage boost added to the hunter in the latest data-mined patch notes. This follows directly from the success of BM/Enh Beastcleave in the recent tourney (i.e. they countercomped RMP).

My reasoning says this is a very slight dps buff to BM in PvE raiding.

A substantial nerf to threat generation for tanking.

A huge blowout, remove from the face of the planet, zomg, obliteration of BM as a PvP ...

Feat: Hodir 25 MT

Thursday night Bubbles successfully tanked Hodir 25. It took two attempts, the first one being an aborted attempt a couple minutes before the enrage timer once it was clear Bubbles wasn't generating enough threat to beat the enrage.

Group composition:

Myself + Panda (Bear) - Tank

Paladin - Healer

Priest - DPS

Hunter - DPS

Death Knight - DPS

Buffs:

Fortitude

Kings

Fish Feast

Spiced Mammoth Treats

Devotion Aura

Panda had 32.9k health, I had just about the same.

The Run:

Had no issues with trash at all, everything went swimmingly up to Commander Kolurg. My paladin healer is normally a tank, so his healing set isn't all that, and he was a tad bit rusty in the healing department...so ...

Heroic: Utgarde Keep (boring)

Yup, boring. We mowed the place. The most exciting moment in the entire run was when the cat-druid who normally plays his MT pally dived in and pulled the first group up on the balcony on the way to the final boss. Nothing to see here, but I thought I'd report it at least.

Hunter health: 31k

Turtle health: 30k

Ho hum.

Ground

PS: At least I found a healer that likes to run with me due to the challenges of keeping the pet up.

Depth focus testing (not the mana replacement).

Just did a test of using depth focus in footage made with WoW Machinima Tool. Just wanted to show it off and perhaps spread some ideas on what can be done in the movie department if people are interested in such things.

This is merged footage from my own private server (don't use WoWMT on public servers ), taken in two passes, one colour pass, and one with a modified depth black and white pass.
