Hunter looking for some pet tanking help

I've tanked heroics before, but my second opportunity to pet tank a raid just came up and I'm kind of looking for some help with the survival end of the theorycrafting.

Right after the patch, my guild decided to let me have a crack at pet tanking Al'akir, which ended in tears (His HP and armor wasn't up to the challenge). We're coming up on the notion of doing Maloriak heroic mode, And our raid leaders have decided to let me tank regular Maloriak as an evaluation for possibly using the pet on heroic maloriak. My concern is last time I got to try this, Terrorpene was taking 60k white swings from Al'akir, and while Maloriak doesn't hit as hard as Al'akir does, I'm afraid 124~125k-ish hp is a bit of a low buffer, even with both healing increase talents.

I'm not worried about threat: on Al'akir I could hold against both our Prot warrior and our Fury warrior who were both going balls out on threat (and I wasn't even BM! I was tanking as marks and didn't MD aside from the pull itself. ) but I'm pretty sure if there's a short pole in this tent, it's the survivability side. I can probably sacrifice some survivability, but any suggestions on how to boss-proof my turtle would be appreciated.

Well couple minor things you can try. I assume you'll be using your spec that has the stamina talent since you're worried about survivability. That spec is missing the bonus healing to mend pet glyph. Not being able to see your "Tanking" gear I can't judge whether you should try different enchants/gems. One thing you can try though since Maloriak won't be huge movement for the pet is moving your points from Charge and Thunderstomp into Silverback. Unless it got stealth buffed, thunderstomp is almost worthless threat wise (I get ~500-1000 per CD, compared to the 30-50k from growl), and since you pet will be tanking mal and not the ads, there won't be any need for the aoe threat aspect of it so that little bit extra healing should help some.

TY for the hand! The Stam spec is going to be my tank spec, and the pet has Silverback and I glyphed mend pet (I'm not sure why that doesn't show on armory.) ( Edit: Forgot that I was trying 3/3 great resist. Doh. )

And, for what it's worth, I don't have enough backup gear to build a dedicated tank set, so I'm basically wearing will be multipurposed until I can get spare gear for the task. I did some adjustments last night to reforging to swap my hit/agi gems to stam/agi, got an extra 1k or so pet hp out of that. I'm not even sure how to adjust my gear other than a sinking feeling I need quite a bit of stam.

What I have done in the past and what I cam currently doing is I get 4pc of pvp gear in order to give my health pool a nice lift. Thanks to reforging I can change some of the stats around to better fit my needs. Don't forget there is enchants and gems as well.

Granted, resil is useless to us now for tanking but its a stat that wont effect us too bad if we have some.

A gear piece I reccomend for a survival set that's easy to get but you may have vendored already is http://www.wowhead.com/item=63745#comments. Zabrox's lucky tooth has 329 stamina and includes a decent controlled mastery use. Note that you will definately be sacrificing some threat swapping trinkets but it's a pretty substantial hp bonus.
