I get this question quite a bit. There's two questions that I always ask them back.

1. Is this your first character or just your first hunter?
2. Do you want to kill things faster or die less?

When leveling as BM a ferocity pet is more than durable enough during normal questing and leveling and also holds aggro fairly easily. Because its the highest damage pet tree you'll also kill things faster and thereby probably level faster.

Tenacity pets have two major advantages over tenacity pets when leveling; They're more durable, and they're more forgiving of mistakes. There will be group quests you can solo with a tenacity pet that you wouldn't be able to do with a ferocity pet. Tenacity pets are more forgiving of mistakes because when you accidentally pull three mobs instead of one your tenacity pet should be able to handle the situation when your ferocity pet might not have.

So when you boil it all down, if its your first character you're going to make mistakes from time to time, go Tenacity. If you find yourself dying a lot, go Tenacity. If you'v been around the block once or twice and you're looking to level your new hunter alt as fast as possible, go Ferocity.

As far as which pet family you should get, thats going to depend on your race and where you're leveling. For Ferocity it doesn't make a heck of a lot of difference, but with Tenacity you'd probably be best off with a Bear, Croc, Turtle or Warpstalker.

Well I have been around the block you could say a couple times even have a horde hunter to 61 and a couple 80's but I haven't played the hunter in awhile. I just switched servers and went to alliance also playing a dwarf trying to find the game in me again I guess needed something different.

Right now I Have a bear so far seems to be going good.

Since this is the pet-tanking hunter forum, I'd recommend a tenacity pet. Gorillas are nice for leveling. They get you a thunder stomp and a pummel caster interrupt. Plus they can tank nicely.

As level 80, I keep a Gorilla and a Turtle. I no longer have a BM talent tree (have MM & SV). Yesterday I solo'd a Party(5) quest chain I hadn't seen before. I did go easy though. I used my turtle in my 6k+ gearscore MM gear. I'd lock aggro on the turtle with a MD and then Distracting Shot them off when he was about to die... then FD when the boss got close to me. Then hit the shield.

Despite the name of the forum, I'd stay away from Rhinos. One: you can't get one for 50 levels or so. Two: they're too big to see around. That said, they're pretty impressive when they're glowing red.

Bears are great! Well they use to be better aoe tanks there swipe was a cone affect like the old druid swipe so that and thunderstomp was killer. Then we got the nerf bat and got some stupid sleep to help there happyness....yeah I know. But! they did get rid of that bs and gave us pretty much a demorlizing shout which still is kinda cool.

IMO Nothing beats my worm with his aoe or my turtle with his shield. I've tanked every instance in Cata (on reg working on the last vids now) soon I'll be starting heroics soon!
