Pet Avoidance Test. Empty Pet Avoidance Test.

I got a Ret pally to help me with a test today to try to figure out the baseline parry, dodge, and block rates for our pets. He was gearless except for his weapon, which didn't have any hit or expertise on it, nor does he get any from glyphs or talents. Here are the results.

http://wowwebstats.com/orsnsiizxmjes?a=Gx68000000114830a#abilities

Miss: 119 5.6%
Parry: 111 5.2%
Dodge: 143 6.8% (Note: My pet was speced into Pet Barding, providing an extra 2% dodge. This test would have shown ~4.8% without it)
Block: 102 4.8%
Hit: 1467 (Note: Blocks seem to be added to this category)
Crit: 275 13% (Note: My pet was speced into Grace of the Mantis for 4% reduced chance to be crit)
Total: 2115

What do we get from this? It seems like our pets probably have a 5% chance to parry, block, and be missed by a same level mob or player, since that's the default for a player and these numbers are all close enough to reasonable assume pets probably use the same game logic.

In hindsight, I wish I had had him use a weapon with a faster attack speed to get a larger sample size for the same time, but he had max weapon skill for 2h swords and not unarmed, and that was the weapon he had on hand.

Soon I'll try to repeat a similar test, but with agility buffs on my pet to see if it gains dodge from Agi. Figuring out the rate that they gain dodge should let us work backwards and figure out what their base dodge is.

13% crit with a 4% reduction to be crit? Shouldn't that have been about 1%?

Not sure exactly. He gets 8% from talents, and his weapon has some Agi and Crit rating on it. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets almost exactly 4% crit chance from his weapon, meaning pets would have a 5% chance to be crit, just as you would expect.

I would imagine his overall crit rating would have had to been 17% not so (talents +weapon + base)? Isn't the 5% just a flat chance for mobs to crit equal level players, surely a player's crit chance on equal level players is just the flat crit chance, I woulda thunk.

The fact that it looks like 5% 5% 5% is the magic number it would appear that it might have something to do with GC's allusion to an odd implementation of pet stats. this seems to suggest that any overhaul would be a substantial operation which may or may not be beneficial to pet tanking depending where GC stands on this issue.

Again 3.0 suggests to me (very strongly I might add, if you haven't guessed it already) that there is a recognition that pet tanking is ultimately the only real solution but that the devs realise that the community may be slow (to put it mildly) to warm to the idea. Any stat change will show us where he falls on this.

Be that as it may, one of the major issues facing the community as a whole right now is Hybrid/Pure under the Bring the Player not the Class regime. Everybody becoming hybrids really is the only way forward to my mind, and with luck hunters may be the first to get there (we already have the penalty anyhow).

Alternatively GC may just revert the whole notion and scrap pets as viable tanks with it, there are many ways he could but I'd warrant it would be even worse from a development POV.

Either way, it will be a very big change from a tanking perspective.
