Pet and Player tanking Empty Pet and Player tanking

Does anyone else Pet-tank and Player-tank? What I mean is that I've been pet-tanking with my 3-person hunter team in Burning Crusade, but I've also rolled up a new alt and I've been player-tanking with my new Paladin in a 4-person team in the first few Classic dungeons.

The main difference I see is the point-of-view from the camera angle.

As a hunter-pet-tank, I get to stand back on the edge of the fight where I can see the big-picture of the fight. It's easy for me to keep track of wandering mobs, and I can see the adds coming in and react to them quickly. However, since I'm so far away, it's sometimes hard to see through the melee mobs surrounding my pet, and that makes it difficult to cycle targets to spread the aggro around more.
(Thunderstomp makes up for this, with AOE aggro for all.)

As a paladin-tank, it's the complete reverse. I can see everything going on up close, and I can cycle targets easily to make sure they all have aggro on me, but it's a bit harder to see the adds coming in until they're already in the fight.
(Paladins have many tricks to save other players from adds though, and can redirect the aggro back to them very quickly.)

Otherwise, tanking is tanking...

I also have a warrior alt, 43, which has tanked dm and stocks, which i intend to continue to use for tanking. One thing I really notice is a big difference is the lack of a full set of tanking moves. I don't always have a move I can do to increase threat if i want to, if they are all on cooldowns. I suppose this just comes from the fact that the pet isnt as fleshed out as a player tank.

I tank as both a bear-tank and a hunter-tank. I can say very definitely that the bear-tanking takes a much different sort of focus than Panzer-tanking. With the player-level viewpoint, you are able to get a much better feel for the critters that you're handling. However, if one does get free, it can be harder to regain it since the rest of the mob is right up in your face, making it difficult to see 'the one that got away'. Depending on the mobs you're tanking, the term 'herding cats' comes to mind.

I couldn't imagine how it would be to tank with a normal class. I think I'd suck quite bad at it. I need the overview of the fight. =)

Might be a fun experiment some day to roll a druid or something when Ulduar becomes as boring as Naxx was pre-patch Wink

I have a lvl 80 Druid that I both tank and heal with. And I belive its alot different then tanking with my hunter. Ive always like to be the odd ball in the groups and I think tanking with a hunter has taken it to the extreme. Its alot easier to see whats going on with my hunter then it is with the druid thats for sure pirat
